Trans Day of Visibility

We honor the trans community and emphasize the discrimination they face every day. In 2009, a US-based transgender activist named Rachel Crandall marked this day to celebrate and bring light to transgender people and their fight for equality. Facts & Statistics on:

Homelessness

  • Around 29% of trans adults live in poverty.
  • 39% are Black trans adults.
  • 48% are Latinx trans adults.
  • 35% are Alaska Native, Asian, Native Americans, Native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander trans adults.
  • Only 30% of women’s shelters are willing to house trans women.

Violence

  • 54% of trans people have experience some form of intimate partner violence.
  • 47% have been sexually assaulted in their lifetime.
  • Nearly 1 in 10 trans people were physically assaulted between 2014 and 2015.
  • At least 27 trans and gender non-conforming people have been violently killed in 2020 in the US.

Healthcare

  • 22% of trans people and 32% of trans people of color have no health insurance coverage.
  • 29% of trans adults have been refused healthcare by a doctor or provider because of their gender identity.

Internationally

  • 13 countries criminalize and target gender expression under “cross-dressing laws.”
  • These include Brunei, Gambia, Indonesia, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malawi, Malaysia, Nigeria, Oman, South Sudan, Tonga, and the UAE.
  • 96 UN member countries have laws in place extending legal gender recognition to trans individuals.
  • 71 of those countries make it extremely difficult or expensive for individuals to complete the process of establishing their gender recognition legally.
