Do you know what your carbon footprint is?

Tips on how to keep the environment clean as we get back to normal after the pandemic.

Do you know what your carbon footprint is?
Your carbon footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (including carbon dioxide and methane) that are generated by your actions. The average carbon footprint for a person in the United States is 16 tons, one of the highest rates in the world.

How do you find out your carbon footprint?
Carbonfootprint.com has a nifty calculator tailored to individuals, small and large businesses, and products. You can easily input your information if you have access to your energy bills.

How do you reduce your carbon footprint?

  • Reduce meat (namely beef) in your diet and avoid wasting food.
  • Walk, bike, carpool, use mass transit, or drive a best-in-class vehicle.
  • Make sure car tires are properly inflated–fuel efficiency decreases by .2% for each PSI decrease of 1.
  • Unplug electronic devices when not in use. This comprises 5-10% of residential energy use (up to $100 extra per year for the average US household!).
  • Choose energy-efficient lighting.
  • Don’t leave the fan/AC on if it’s not necessary.
  • Waste less water–don’t leave it running, take shorter showers, etc.
  • Reduce what you send to a landfill by recycling, composting, and buying products with minimal packaging.
