Today is Black Women’s Equal Pay Day.
Black women must work 579 days to earn what white men do in 365.
August 3rd is the approximate day Black women must work into the new year to catch up with what white non-Hispanic men made at the end of the previous year. Based on ACS Census data, the 2021 wage gap for Black women compared to non-Hispanic white men is $0.63 (cents). Furthermore, more than 1 in 5 Black women are breadwinners for their families, which means partners and children are dependent on their income.
Only 17% of working Black women are sure that their employer pays men and women equally. 55% of Black women surveyed have faced gender or racial discrimination obstacles to higher-paying jobs. We still have a ways to go to close this gap, but the first step is spreading awareness and emphasizing the important of equal pay.
